Josh Gellers

AI Governance, Ethics & Responsible AI Scholar

Professor Josh Gellers is a globally engaged scholar and advisor specializing in artificial intelligence ethics, governance, and public policy. He serves as Dean of Professional and Lifelong Learning and Faculty Fellow for Artificial Intelligence at the University of North Florida, where he advances education and institutional capacity-building around emerging technologies.


He is an expert with the Global AI Ethics Institute and a member of the City of Jacksonville Data Advisory Committee, contributing to real-world discussions on data governance and responsible innovation. His work bridges academia, policy, and public engagement, helping governments, organizations, and civil society navigate the ethical and societal challenges of AI.


Professor Gellers has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and academic volumes, including two books such as Rights for Robots: Artificial Intelligence, Animal and Environmental Law (Routledge, 2020). He holds degrees from the University of Florida, Columbia University, and the University of California, Irvine, reflecting a strong interdisciplinary foundation in political science, climate and society, and global governance.


He has provided expert guidance on artificial intelligence to legislators, academic institutions, non-profits, and media outlets, translating complex issues into accessible insights that support responsible decision-making in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
